A Brief History of Acupuncture
 

Acupuncture has been practiced for more than 2,000 years, with its roots in ancient China. One of the earliest foundational texts, the Huangdi Neijing (The Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine), was compiled more than 2,000 years ago and described many of the theories that continue to influence acupuncture today.

Where did acupuncture begin?
 

Acupuncture developed in ancient China as part of a broader system of medicine now known as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Over centuries, it spread throughout East Asia and eventually around the world.

Who developed it?
 
There was no single inventor of acupuncture. Instead, generations of Chinese physicians observed the human body, documented patterns of health and illness, and refined acupuncture techniques over hundreds of years.
 

What is acupuncture?
 
Acupuncture involves inserting very thin, sterile needles into specific points on the body. Traditionally, these points are understood as part of an interconnected system of pathways, or meridians, that help regulate the body and maintain balance.
 

How does it work?
 
Traditional Chinese Medicine describes acupuncture as a way to regulate the flow of Qi (pronounced “chee”), support the body’s organ systems, and restore balance between Yin and Yang.
Modern research looks at acupuncture through another lens, studying its effects on the nervous system, circulation, connective tissue, pain signaling, and the release of the body’s own pain-relieving chemicals.
 
Why has it lasted so long?
 
Acupuncture has endured for thousands of years because it has continued to evolve while maintaining its traditional roots. What began as an ancient system of medicine is now practiced around the world and is increasingly studied through modern scientific research.

Today, acupuncture has been examined in thousands of clinical studies, with some of the strongest evidence supporting its use for certain types of chronic pain, low back pain, osteoarthritis, headaches, and migraines. Research has also shown that acupuncture can influence the nervous system, pain-processing pathways in the brain, connective tissue, and the body's natural pain-relieving mechanisms.

Scientists are still working to fully understand how acupuncture produces its effects—and evidence is stronger for some conditions than others—but acupuncture has moved far beyond being studied solely as an ancient healing tradition. It is now an active area of clinical and neuroscience research, bringing thousands of years of traditional knowledge into conversation with modern medicine.
